A Toronto-based accounting and financial services professional, Andrew Sommerhalder has served as a group controller with Envision since January of 2019. To augment and inform his professional activities, Andrew Sommerhalder holds active membership with both CPA Canada and CPA Ontario.
The leading association of Ontario CPAs (chartered professional accountants), CPA Ontario administers official CPA certification and provides a wide range of professional resources. Its purview spans all areas of accounting advocacy, regulation, and thought leadership. As part of its ongoing commitment to ethical oversight, CPA Ontario released the article “Resigning from an Assurance Engagement” in 2021. This article outlined the rare circumstances under which a CPA can and should discontinue their statutory duties as an auditor. In particular, CPAs should resign from an assurance engagement when it presents a conflict of interest, or when provided financial misstatements lead to a loss of trust in the client. Of course, CPAs should also break an assurance engagement with any client who induces them to perform illegal or fraudulent acts. They should also break assurance engagements in the wake of any business partnerships that create viable threats to independence.
